Jeanie Johnston
I took a day sail around Dublin Bay aboard the Jeanie Johnston, a replica famine ship. The harbour disappeared in the mist behind us as we sailed away into the heavy fog. I could well imagine how it must have been for those leaving home forever, sailing off into the unknown.

Below Deck
The journey to Canada took six weeks. Passengers spent most of it below deck, a few were allowed up to cook or clean, but during rough weather, all were tossed about in the dark berths below. This is a museum display aboard the Jeanie Johnston . Notice how passengers were squished in one bunk, head to feet.

The Dunbrody
Built in Quebec in 1845, the original Dunbrody carried many emigrants across the Atlantic during the famine. This is a replica. I toured the ship, interviewed the crew, and got some wonderful references and resources from the founder of the Dunbrody project.
